HISTORICAL NOTES ON MONTESCUDAIO The first historical documents date back to the 11th century, when the settlement consisted of a castle owned by the Della Gherardesca family. They settled in Montescudaio permanently and established an autonomous branch of the family. The ”Counts of Montescudaio” were involved in various acts of rebellion against the Republic of Pisa, which dominated these territories during the medieval period. The revolts were suppressed, but in 1406, when Pisa and the surrounding area were sold to Florence, the counts hurried to gain favor with the new lords, successfully obtaining the title of vicars in Maremma. However, the inhabitants of Montescudaio, with the authorization of Florence, established themselves as a Municipality; they created new statutes and managed to oust the counts from the castle. The Municipality ceased to exist in 1648 when the entire area became a feudal estate of the Ridolfi marquises of Florence. The feudal estates were abolished a century later, but the subsequent agrarian reform of 1770 did not prevent a division of the land between only two owners. In 1846, several damages were recorded due to a violent earthquake that destroyed the oldest houses of the castle. Further devastation occurred with the earthquake of 1871. After the unification of Italy, the settlement experienced slow development; by 1927, there were almost three thousand inhabitants, but after World War II, there was a demographic collapse due to emigration to the new centers along the Livorno coast. In the second half of the twentieth century, the settlement expanded into the Fiorino district, near Cecina, while the nearby locality of Poggio Gagliardo became the main industrial and artisanal area.
