Oldsmobile was automobile company founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. Automobiles branded as Oldsmobile were produced for most of its history by General Motors. Oldsmobile became the top selling car company in the United States in 1903 - 1904. Ransom Olds left the company in 1904 because of a dispute and formed the REO Motor Car Company. Oldsmobile invented the automotive assembly line. This invention is attributed to Henry Ford, but it was first used in 1901 by Oldsmobile to produce Oldsmobile Curved Dash. Ford had the first assembly line that was moving, but he was not inventor of this concept. The history of Oldsmobile Curved Dash is also interesting one - this model was the only model for many prototype models ready for mass production that survived fire of the factory. When the new factory was built it was the only model that was available. It became so popular that in 1905 it was featured in hit song “ In My Merry Oldsmobile”. The company was very successful through the years and created many iconic models such as Cutlass, Toronado, Omega and many more. Despite its success especially during mid 1990s in 2000s they had suffered decrease in sales. In December 2000 General Motors decided to shut down the Oldsmobile. Last vehicle that was manufactured was Bravada SUV. The Oldsmobile division's last completed production car was an Alero GLS 4-door sedan, which was signed by all of the Olds assembly line workers. It was on display at the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum located in Lansing, Michigan, until GM's bankruptcy when they retook possession of the car. It is now located at the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
Oldsmobile was closed in 2004 and it was oldest surviving America automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world (after Daimler, Peugeot and Tatra)
