If you watched “Back to the Future” movies, maybe you remember the sports car rebuilt by an eccentric inventor into a time machine. It was the DeLorean DMC-12. The DeLorean Motor Company which produced that time-travelling vehicle was founded by John DeLorean in 1975. After a few turbulent years, the American manufacturer went bankrupt in 1982. In 1995 the mechanic, Stephen Wynne set up a separate company, DeLorean Motor Company, which serve as a support for the owners of DeLorean cars by providing the remaining original parts. The manufacturer planned also to relaunch the production of the DMC-12 in 2017.
Rare & Exclusive DeLorean Cars
DeLorean was a one-car manufacturer. The DMC-12 model is definitely the company’s sole and most notable creation. DeLorean produced approximately 9000 units of this car, all of them between 1981 and 1982. The unpainted stainless steel body panels and characteristic gull-wing doors appeared to be an attractive design concept. Unfortunately the car itself with its rear-mounted engine was not as fast (just a 0-60 mph time of 10.5 seconds) as it could have been comparing to other sports vehicles from its price category. The unfortunate series of events, the company’s financial turbulences and its owner’s troubles with law, consigned the DeLorean Motor Company to history but the DMC-12 model has survived in culture, immortalized in the famous sci-fi trilogy.
Who Drives DeLorean Cars
Thanks to the popularity of “Back to the Future” DeLorean DMC-12 became the pop cultural icon and the car legend, remaining famous among not only the American sports cars enthusiasts but also the fans of the world famous movie series. Since 2009 DMC founded by Wynne have released, alone or in collaboration, the collections of T-shirts, hats, shoes and other accessories inspired by the DMC-12 image and design. It is estimated that about 6500 original DMC cars survived to these days and a large number of them is still operating. The DMC-12 cars have also charmed many celebrities such as Patrick Swayze, Stan Lee, Ke$ha, will.i.am, Kanye West, Die Antwoord and Jerry Seinfeld.
