Described as “Florida’s best kept secret”, Ocean Reef Club is a private club community located on the tip of Key Largo, with membership by invitation only.
- Ocean Reef Club is a place where generations of members and their families have experienced the wonder of living on 2500 pristine acres, while also enjoying the almost contradictory pleasures of a community that values art and culture as much as golf and tennis.
- According to Ocean Reef Club representatives, the clubs central mission is to continually support and enhance its Unique Way of Life for existing members and their families.
Let’s find out what are the top reasons to become a Social Member of the Ocean Reef Club.
1. More than 15 different clubs to meet others, explore new interests or pursue a lifelong passion
Social Membership is a great option for those who want to dive deeper into the Ocean Reef Lifestyle.
At The Reef, Members and their families lead interesting and exciting lives, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Clubs within the Club. With more than 15 different organizations, ranging from bridge and art societies to flying and croquet, Members are afforded the opportunity to meet like minds, explore new interests or focus on a lifelong passion. And although these clubs bring Members together for fun, many are also dedicated to good works.
2. World class fishing on the only living coral reef in American waters
Convenient to the Bahamas and encompassed by the famed waters of the Florida Keys, Ocean Reef Club’s 17-Slip marina is nothing short of world class. And it is the perfect setting for fishing.
Surrounded by clear, warm waters, the variety of local fish is astounding. You can fish on the Flats, out in open waters – or on the reef.
The reef itself is the only living coral reef in American waters. It towers above the seafloor, sheltering an amazing variety of species. Between 15 and 60 feet down, you’ll encounter sapper, porgy, grouper, hogfish, mackerel, jacks, and many others. It’s unforgettable entertainment.
3. A world class private marina and private airport available exclusively to Club Members
Ocean Reef Club has literally grown up around its prized marina. As the primary port of call for generations of avid sportsmen and their families, the marina has formed the heart of this revered club.
Convenient to the Bahamas and encompassed by the famed waters of the Florida Keys, Ocean Reef’s 175-slip, mega-yacht marina is nothing short of world-class.
Arguably one of the finest marinas in the world, a full range of dockmaster services and private fleets of charter boats are available exclusively to members and their guests. Having long attracted legendary sports fishermen and yachtsmen to its harbor, the marina is a place where boaters have met and gathered for decades.
As well, the airport at Ocean Reef is one of the Club’s prime amenities.
This vital private airport facility is the welcoming point for many returning Members. Before arrival at Ocean Reef’s private airport, all aircraft must be registered. Each pilot-in-command is required to sign a statement assuring the Club that he or she has read, understood and will comply with all published rules and regulations prior to landing.
4. Ocean Reef’s Affiliate Yacht Club Program
The Program gives Members a chance to enjoy the experience of visiting different clubs throughout the US, Canada and the Bahamas. Each club dictates different privileges, availability, policies and usage for Ocean Reef Members.
In turn, Ocean Reef Club maintains the same controls for Members of these clubs who wish to visit The Reef.

5. One of the world’s most scenic golf courses
Golf traditions go back more than half a century to 1955 when the Club’s first 9-hole course opened as an alternative to fishing.
Although the Hammock Course and the Dolphin Course offer distinctly different tastes of golf, both feature scenic vistas and an enjoyable challenge for players of all levels.
The Hammock Course: the only course in the world set in a tropical hardwood hammock (with up to 20 different plant species within 10 feet)
- With water hazards on 14 of the 18 holes, concentration becomes key to a good round.
- This par-71 course is 6,200 yards in length.
The Dolphin course: Exotic landscaping featuring fairways winding past tamarind, coconut palms and mahogany trees
- 6,500-yard par-71 course.
- Much more margin for error off the tee, with quite generous fairways.
Other golf experiences include:
- The Academy of Golf (individual and group instruction formats, the latest in golf-teaching computer software).
- Numerous golf leagues and tournaments, plus summer camps to teach the next generation of golfers.
6. Plenty of other sporting activities, from professional tennis coaching to croquet
Tennis has traditionally played a major role in the Ocean Reef Club lifestyle since the Tennis Center opened in 1969. The annual Member–Guest Tennis Tournament is one of the longest-standing Club traditions, celebrating more than 40 years. With a total of 10 courts at two locations (six of which are lit for evening play), there’s always a court available for practice, a game or a lesson.
There is also a chance to join a growing racquet sport, pickleball, your whole family will love. And one more popular activity at Ocean Reef is the game of croquet. Members meet for weekly Ninewicket tournaments that combine skill, strategy and lots of fun.
7. Enticing restaurants collection and a private cooking school
Ocean Reef Club’s enticing collection of restaurants and lounges offer a variety of waterfront vistas, including the ocean, lagoon or pools. Rivaling the tropical views is a delicious choice of cuisine – everything from elegant dining to refreshing tropical drinks poolside or freshly grilled fare under the palms.
From the seaside elegance of the Islander to the casual atmosphere in the Raw Bar to the lively vibe at the Burgee Bar, dining is a highlight at Ocean Reef Club.
You’ll always find a spot to satisfy your appetite and match your mood, and when you prefer to dine in privacy, our catering team is eager to provide service to any lodging accommodation at Ocean Reef Club for an everyday meal or special occasion.
So deep is the love of food at Ocean Reef Club that it has its own cooking school, where you can learn shoulder to shoulder from cutting-edge chefs, cookbook authors, and Ocean Reef’s own master chefs.
8. Over 100 majestic vacation rentals
Ocean Reef Club Vacation Rentals allow Social Members — as well as guests of Members — to make the most of their stay at the private paradise.
There are well over 100 properties from which to choose, offering Social Members more choices and the ability to experience a change of scenery each time they visit.
9. Children’s activities ranging from night camps to nature programs to golf all located on property
The Club’s privacy and security provide a worry-free world for parents, where children spend hours in the sand and shallows of Buccaneer Island’s lagoon, easily supervised as Mom and Dad relax on the beach. At Ocean Reef, children have their own Reef Club Kids program plus a fun night camp with dinner.
Teens, who can earn an Ocean Reef golf cart driver’s license, enjoy the freedom of being off with their friends, safe and protected and never more than a few minutes’ drive from their families.
10. Seasonal events to keep your social calendar full all year round
A delightful variety of year-round events at Ocean Reef Club await – honestly too numerous to list. From special holiday celebrations like Festival on the Green, Easter Cart Parade and Holiday Concert to live performances in the Cultural Center and off-shore fishing tournaments, Members experience the excitement and beauty of Ocean Reef Club in every season.
