Wonderful estate for private residence or a charming hotel, with the possibility of also having a luxury restaurant. Quinta das Acácias, with its manor house and chapel, dates back to 1713 and survived the devastation caused by the 1755 earthquake that tragically struck Lisbon and the surrounding area. It is located atop the hill overlooking the Serra do Socorro, offering stunning views. It was once a key communication and observation point for the Lines of Torres, where the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Socorro and some buildings that served as the Duke of Wellington’s headquarters during the French invasions still remain. This site is locally known as Wellington’s Eagle’s Nest. The parish of Azueira was once very prosperous and politically and economically important. Historical evidence includes several estates that belonged to prominent and influential members of society at the time, such as Quinta das Acácias. It was part of the extensive heritage of a high-ranking military officer nicknamed Brunette Gorjão, whose widow lived there until the mid-20th century without descendants. The manor house and chapel face Largo Brunette, named to honor the family of José Brunette Gorjão, grandfather of the estate’s last owner. They retain their original architecture and features, including many original materials and construction elements inside. The last owners made some adjustments and restorations, preserving the original style, ceilings, floors, stonework, sculptures, and tiles from the period. Independent from the manor and chapel, there are leisure and support facilities such as: - Rustic housing for caretakers near the service entrance (old iron gate), strategically located. - Stables with boxes, tack room, storage for straw and feed, riding arena with sound system, animal showers, support facilities for handlers and/or riders, and paddock. - Small sports park with a multipurpose rink for skating, volleyball, basketball, futsal, or tennis. - Small playground. - Service vehicle and agricultural equipment boxes. - Henhouses, two side vegetable gardens, and a variety of fruit trees, all hidden by hedges and climbing plants. - Pond with an artificial island and vegetation suitable for birds, reptiles, and other exotic animals. - Unusual well, accessible down to the water level via masonry stairs, engraved with the year of construction (1713). - Rock-dug spring with an underground retention basin featuring a protected terrace with railings, offering very pleasant visits, especially in summer. - Fountain with beautiful bronze sculptures, multiple spouts, and jets. - Swimming pool with a large spout, marble non-slip surrounding floor, and balconies overlooking breathtaking landscapes. - Large gardened areas with lawns and lush vegetation. Between the main and service gates stands the old olive press and storage building, an impressive complex now used as a large social hall for games or parties. It features a large fireplace-smoker with stone benches inside, allowing many people to gather in healthy conviviality on winter nights, burning large logs for days, and curing homemade sausages or hams. This complex also includes a support kitchen, two mezzanine bedrooms, pantries, wine cellars, two bathrooms, and internal access to the main garage, which fits nine cars. The manor house and chapel are the newest built areas but deserve special mention for their historical importance. They are now the village’s landmark, with the chapel serving as a place of worship and devotion, especially when it frequently hosts the Pilgrim Our Lady of Fatima and, every seventeen years, Our Lady of Nazaré. The latter event is a devoted festive manifestation for the people of the Oeste region and many devotees from across the country who attend. The estate owners open the chapel to the public on these and other worship occasions. Besides external access, there is a door to a confessional and direct connection to private quarters. Inside, the estate features five suites, three lounges, a huge dining room, a breakfast room, an office, two regular bedrooms, six bathrooms, a large and characteristic old kitchen fully adapted, pantry, and laundry area. The master suite opens onto a panoramic terrace/solarium, offering views not only of the entire estate but also of Serra do Socorro and its hermitage, a historic battle site right in front of us (stunning scenic views). Noteworthy are the original stone thresholds, stairs, lintels, some benches, and other stonework, as well as some restored and treated original wooden ceilings and floors. An interesting detail is that all windows have characteristic stone side benches from the period, also called ”conversadeiras.” Many tile panels with religious and period motifs enrich the interior and exterior walls, along with stone niches and an alabaster piece, presumably original construction details, some with sculptures. This estate holds much history and is now part of the Union of Parishes of Azueira and Sobral da Abelheira, formerly Azueira, which was once the seat of the municipality including the parishes of Freiria, Gradil, Sobral da Abelheira, Enxara de Cavaleiros, Enxara do Bispo, Milharado, Sapataria, and Trucifal until 1855. The municipal offices were located precisely in Bandalhoeira, at the junction with Calçada da Quinta, the road separating it from Quinta das Acácias. Historical references surrounding this estate, its families, the French invasions, geographic involvement, ethnography, and more are so extensive that they merit further exploration for interest or curiosity. Beyond strictly residential use, Quinta das Acácias is an excellent venue for events, especially weddings, which can be held in the chapel, authorized for such use. It offers facilities for refreshments and accommodation for the bride and groom and/or guests, with pleasant gardened spaces, a large pool, ponds, and fountains, as well as equestrian and sports facilities. It is also ideal for birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, group meetings, corporate events, and more. Schedule your visit now!
