Sumptuous Property Between The Alpilles And Camargue

Arles occupies a singular position in the south of France, where the Camargue wetlands open to the west and the limestone ridges of the Alpilles rise to the north. The city carries genuine historical weight: its Roman amphitheatre and theatre, its early Christian necropolis at Alyscamps, and its medieval architecture earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1981. It is also inseparable from Van Gogh, who produced over 300 works here, and from the annual Les Rencontres de la Photographie festival, which draws an international audience each July.

Daily life in Arles centres on the Place de la République and the Saturday market on the Boulevard des Lices, one of the largest and most respected markets in Provence. Restaurants such as Le Galoubet and L’Atelier de Jean-Luc Rabanel, the latter holding two Michelin stars, anchor a serious dining scene. The Fondation LUMA, designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2021, has added a major contemporary arts institution to the city.

Arles is served by its own train station with direct TGV connections to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately four hours, and to Marseille in under an hour. Marseille Provence Airport is roughly 70 kilometres away, around 50 minutes by car, offering extensive European and international routes. Montpellier is reachable in under an hour by road, and Avignon, with its own TGV station, is approximately 35 kilometres to the north.
