O SOBREIRINHO | NATURE & WELLNESS RETREAT

Set within a landscape of exceptional natural beauty, O Sobreirinho lies just five minutes from Tomar, the historic city of the Knights Templar and a UNESCO World Heritage destination.

It is here, in a secluded and bucolic setting of absolute tranquillity, surrounded by native vegetation and close to the River Nabão, that the first paper mill in the Iberian Peninsula once operated.

Founded in 1850 by Nicolau Tesla, a member of a family closely connected to the region’s paper-making industry, the former mill now stands as an impressive ruin, where large openings, imposing volumes and solid stone walls still bear witness to its industrial past.

Its historical significance is complemented by an exceptional location, defined by uninterrupted greenery and the proximity of the river, creating an ideal setting for a rural tourism, nature, wellness and wellbeing destination.

The property has already obtained approval from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) for its rehabilitation, as well as an approved Preliminary Information Request (PIP) for its conversion into a hospitality development comprising 10 guest rooms/accommodation units, with a total capacity of 20 beds. The project is also eligible for non-repayable investment incentive programmes for tourism development.

The proposed architectural concept seeks to preserve the industrial soul of the site, retaining the strength and character of the original stone façades and their imposing scale, while introducing a new contemporary structure within them. This new intervention is designed to provide all the comfort, functionality and technical standards expected of a modern hospitality project.

The result is an approach that safeguards the memory, authenticity and industrial identity of the former paper mill, while reinterpreting it as a distinctive contemporary tourism destination.

The estate extends over more than 4.5 hectares, spanning both banks of the River Nabão, and benefits from direct pedestrian access to Sobreirinho river beach.
