If you find yourself walking along the avenues of Bordighera and feel like you are in England, it is because in the late 19th century the English transformed it into an important town, competing with Nice and Menton. The climate here is mild, even in winter, and France is only about twenty kilometers away. Among its famous guests was Claude Monet, who was inspired by the natural landscapes of the Riviera and painted 34 canvases here.
If boating is your passion, Bordighera’s small harbor offers a tourist marina. From the harbor, boats also depart for whale-watching tours in the Cetacean Sanctuary.
Bordighera’s beach has held the Blue Flag for years, featuring numerous well-equipped bathing establishments. Lungomare Argentina is the longest seaside promenade on the Riviera, inaugurated by Evita Peron (from whom it takes its name), who stayed here in July 1947. Villa Margherita, on Via Romana, was the private residence of Queen Margherita of Savoy, Italy’s first queen; since 2011, it has housed a museum and art gallery with collections from the Terruzzi Foundation.
A must-visit is the Exotic Pallanca Garden, located on a steep rocky slope overlooking the sea, with typical Ligurian terraces and bands: it hosts 3,200 species of plants, including a precious collection of cacti and succulents. Bordighera’s history dates back to Roman times. The historic center has preserved the ancient fortified village surrounded by medieval walls and is crossed by a dense network of alleys and small squares.
