We have enjoyed eighteen years of living here in exceptional tranquillity, and all this just twenty minutes from Antwerp city centre. It makes us proud to live in a location that nobody could have imagined. This historic heritage site is a unique, fantastic place to retreat to in complete peace and quiet. At the same time, it’s wonderfully lively here – bustling, without ever becoming overwhelmingly busy. Our charming little square, cafés and terraces, a few events each year, such as the second-hand book markets, concerts in the church, local traditional activities…

The exceptional location also sometimes attracts surprising visitors, such as classic car clubs stopping off here, and many international guests keen to catch a glimpse of this slice of living history. Fort-Lillo is what it is; nothing more may be built here!

It really gives you a special feeling to drive past the countryside to your home, only to retreat behind the fort’s ramparts, just a few minutes’ walk from the mighty Scheldt… The Scheldt embankment is perfect for long walks, or simply for a moment of tranquillity, to admire the ever-changing play of light between the water and the sky.

Did you know, by the way, that the inhabitants of Lillo are called ‘crab catchers’? The symbol of Lillo, on the other hand, is a unicorn, which you can still see on the roof of the white windmill.
