Zuckerberg's Castle Country: 10 Heritage Estates Redefining Old-World Living
Landmark Baronial Residence Near Glasgow | Scotland, United Kingdom | €2,915,414

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have reportedly acquired Strancally Castle, an 1830 Gothic Revival house set on a 440-acre estate in County Waterford, overlooking the Blackwater River, a private Irish base within reach of Meta’s European headquarters.

As The Guardian reported, the transaction was handled off-market. It does not appear on Ireland’s public price register, while The Irish Times estimated its likely value at between €20 million and €30 million.

Zuckerberg’s purchase has brought renewed attention to Ireland’s heritage-property market. But what can buyers actually find there? The defining theme is scale and land: substantial acreage, equestrian facilities and expansive grounds are among the features that stand out most clearly in the listing data.

Britain and Ireland: A Distinct Heritage Market

Ireland’s supply is scarce, but nearby Scotland and England offer a broader selection of estates with similar historic character, substantial grounds and a comparable sense of place.

We examined how often specific features appear across heritage listings in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, focusing on castle-tier and other historic estates.

Land and equestrian use are defining features of the market. Around one in five heritage estates across Britain and Ireland includes equestrian facilities, while roughly half come with parkland or extensive grounds.

Across the English Channel, comparable features are considerably less common. In Europe’s largest heritage markets, France and Italy, equestrian features appear in just 8% of listed estates. Instead, 24.5% include vineyards, while more than 40% feature olive groves, reflecting a distinctly Mediterranean lifestyle.

Buyers are more than twice as likely to find a pool in France and Italy: 16% of heritage listings feature one, compared with 7% across Britain and Ireland.

Which properties are attracting the most attention from buyers today? From coastal castles to late medieval estates, we selected the most-viewed heritage listings across Ireland and Britain and grouped them by region.
