When Anja and Kerstin return from their walk, they step into the elevator together. Anja puts her key away, the doors close quietly—and a few moments later, the elevator opens right inside the apartment.

After taking a look at the large terrace, they head back into the hallway. “Just wait,” says Anja, “you haven’t even seen the other rooms yet.”

The private area begins on the left side of the hallway. To the right is the quiet bedroom; across from it is Michael’s office with direct access to the terrace. Anja knocks briefly. Michael opens the door, gives Kerstin a warm hug, and smiles: “I’ll be done in a minute, then I’ll join you.”

Between the rooms, Anja points out the spacious storage room—handy for groceries and household appliances. At the other end of the hallway is the bright main bathroom with a bathtub, a window, and hookups for a washer and dryer.

Then Anja opens another door. “Kerstin, this is your room for the next few days.”

Kerstin looks around. “It’s just like a hotel.”

“And you have your own bathroom, too,” says Anja, pointing to the separate shower room.

Shortly afterward, they’re sitting together on the southwest-facing terrace. Kerstin looks out over Friedrichspark and says softly, “You did everything just right, sis—you can really feel at home here.”

Anja is standing in front of her apartment building in Friedrichspark, looking down the street. Kerstin, her sister from North Rhine-Westphalia, is about to arrive for her first visit to Michael and Anja’s new home.

As Kerstin pulls up, Anja waves to her and gets into the car for a moment. “Just drive into the underground parking garage. From there, we can easily take the elevator up.”

As the car rolls slowly down, Kerstin asks curiously, “So? Do you actually miss your house?”

After the long drive, Kerstin wants to stretch her legs. Together they stroll through the spacious green areas of Friedrichspark. Amid old trees, well-maintained paths, and the adjacent community gardens, everything feels peaceful and open.

The path continues toward Walkebuck and past the forest kindergarten. Here, Anja talks about her grandsons, Tim and Luis, who regularly spend time in nature. Michael and Anja often pick them up—one of the reasons why they feel so at home here.

Vast fields, cows in the meadows, and fresh country air remind Kerstin more of the Allgäu than of a suburb of Südstadt. Michael and Anja enjoy picking up fresh eggs, potatoes, and regional products at the small farm stand.

The return trip takes them through Friedengrund, which features sports facilities, a gym, an indoor riding arena, an indoor tennis court, and a restaurant at the airfield.

Just before Friedrichspark, Anja points out Lidl, the Sparkasse, the Aral gas station, and the indoor swimming pool. “And if we go straight ahead along the Hubenloch, we’ll be in the city center in no time.”
Kerstin is delighted. Michael and Anja have given up their house—but not their quality of life.
