Veauce Castle

Veauce Castle, the largest private castle in Allier, is located on a rocky spur overlooking the Veauce and Guêle valleys, a strategic site occupied since Antiquity. Mentioned as early as the 11th century, it was heavily fortified in the 13th century with a regular plan, circular towers, and characteristic defensive systems.

Becoming a royal fief in the 14th century and later owned by the Dukes of Bourbon, it played an active military role during the Hundred Years’ War. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Veauce established itself as a powerful barony and, according to tradition, hosted illustrious figures such as Joan of Arc.

Transformed over the centuries, the castle retains significant medieval remains, complemented by Renaissance modifications and extensive modernization in the 19th century under Charles Eugène de Cadier, who created an English-style landscaped park and developed the village. The estate, remaining in the family until 1969, covers more than 10 hectares and is organized around a large main courtyard bordered by several wings and living quarters, some of which are severely deteriorated.
