Located on the ground floor of the prestigious new Hinton development, this spacious two-bedroom apartment, complete with a private parking space, is ideal for those who value the convenience of being within walking distance of everything Funchal city centre has to offer.
But before we explore the apartment itself, it is worth understanding the remarkable history behind this location. From the 18th century onwards, British settlers established a strong presence in Madeira, attracted by the island’s growing commercial opportunities. Among them was William Hinton, who chose Madeira as his family home in 1838. Over time, W. Hinton developed a deep appreciation for Madeiran culture and played an important role in the island’s economic growth. He contributed significantly to the development of the wicker industry and banana cultivation, but his greatest impact came through industry. Following in his father’s visionary footsteps, Harry Hinton established the steam-powered industrial complex known as the Engenho do Hinton or Fábrica do Torreão in Funchal in 1845. The factory quickly became a symbol of technological innovation and economic progress in Madeira.
The Engenho do Hinton was an extraordinary industrial achievement: By the beginning of the 20th century, it employed over 230 workers. In 1920, the factory reached peak production, processing 608 tons of sugar cane within a 24-hour period, making it one of the largest sugar cane processing facilities in Europe. It became renowned for producing high-purity sugar cane juice, later fermented and distilled into Madeira Agricole Rum. Such was the importance of this industry that, during the first half of the 20th century, Madeira became known as ’the island of rum’.
Although the original Hinton factory no longer exists, having made way for the Santa Luzia Gardens, its legacy remains very much alive. Today, the Santa Luzia Gardens are considered one of the city’s most harmonious green spaces. The preserved industrial chimney and surviving machinery stand as timeless reminders of Madeira’s rich sugar industry heritage. Covering approximately 13,600 m², the gardens are divided into five beautifully designed themed areas: the Laurissilva Garden, the Terraces Garden, the Water Garden, the Tropical Garden, and the Amphitheatre Garden. Together, they showcase a remarkable botanical diversity, featuring tropical species alongside native plants from Madeira’s indigenous forest.
Designed by landscape architect Luís Paulo Ribeiro, this exceptional urban green space received an Honourable Mention in the National Landscape Architecture Awards in the category of Public Outdoor Spaces. The gardens provide an ideal retreat within the heart of the city perfect for enjoying a coffee, walking barefoot on the grass, taking the dog for a stroll, or watching your children enjoy the playground.
