Saint-Raphaël sits at the western edge of the Esterel Massif, where the rust-red porphyry cliffs of the Corniche de l’Esterel meet the Mediterranean. The town has a distinct character that separates it from the more overtly glamorous resorts to the east: it is a working coastal city with a genuine year-round population, a Belle Époque seafront, and direct access to some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the French Riviera.
Daily life centres on the old port and the covered market on Place Victor Hugo, open every morning. The seafront promenade connects the main beach to the marina at Santa Lucia. Restaurants including Le Lamparo and La Voile d’Or serve fresh catch from the local fishing fleet. The Esterel hiking trails begin at the edge of town, and the beaches of Agay and Anthéor are a short drive along the coast road.
Saint-Raphaël has a mainline TGV station with direct services to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately three hours and to Marseille in under an hour. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is roughly 60 kilometres east, reachable in around 50 minutes by car outside peak season. Cannes is approximately 40 kilometres west, around 45 to 50 minutes by road, and is also served by direct regional rail in under 30 minutes.
