The name derives from the archaic Portuguese ’regalengo’ or ’reguengo’, which designated the lands belonging to the King. These lands were leased to farmers in exchange for payments to the Crown. The term ’Grande’ was added to distinguish the territory by its size.

In August 1808, the parish suffered directly from the impacts of Napoleonic conflicts, since the famous Battle of Roliça took place on its eastern limit.

Today, Reguengo Grande extends over about 1552 hectares and is widely recognised for the natural beauty of its valleys and orchards. Its main contemporary tourist and ecological highlight is the Cornaga Valley, where the well-known Water Route is located
