In the heart of Lecce, just a short walk from Piazza Mazzini, stands the former Serafini building—a refined testament to the architectural elegance that defined the birth of the modern city. Constructed in 1936 based on a design by engineer Tommaso Martello for Ada Serafini, it serves as one of the most significant examples of a bourgeois residence from the early 20th century in the Salento region.
Characterized by balanced and harmonious lines, the building comprises two above-ground floors and a basement, housing four independent residences and an internal courtyard garden that completes its sophisticated, period-appropriate composition.
The facades, crafted from Lecce stone and *carparo* (a local porous limestone) and finished in warm shades of ochre and yellow, reveal a highly balanced compositional approach: sculpted cornices, floral friezes, wooden doorways, and wrought-iron balconies reflect a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and decorative flair. At the rear, an arched portico and a continuous balcony create an interplay of solid and void—a feature of extraordinary elegance that allows light from the garden to permeate the interior spaces.
Inside, the building retains its original polychrome cement-tile floors, Art Nouveau-style painted decorations, period doors and fixtures, and a monumental reinforced-concrete staircase with a wooden handrail. Every detail speaks to an era when living was an expression of style and restraint.
Today, the former Serafini building stands as a rare, remarkably well-preserved example of early 20th-century residential architecture, where eclecticism, classical taste, and a modern sensibility converge. It is an asset of significant historical and cultural value—protected under Article 10 of the Italian Cultural Heritage Code—and an authentic testament to the elegant, cultured, and luminous Lecce of the 1930s. A careful conservation-focused restoration would restore the full architectural and decorative legibility of the former Serafini building, enhancing its historical identity without compromising its functionality. The project could include: the restoration of stone surfaces and original decorative elements; the conversion of interior spaces for residential or representative use; and structural and systems upgrades, carried out with respect for the original materials and techniques. Once restored, the building could serve as a high-end residence, an institutional or cultural venue, or an exclusive hospitality property—standing as a testament to the continuity between historical memory and innovation.
