Its main beach, Praia da Luz, has a wonderful sandy shoreline, calm waters, and the incredible cliff of Rocha Negra, formed over 150 million years ago as a result of lava emanating from Monchique’s once-active volcanoes. Luz is a historic village and from the waters are ancient Roman ruins, including fishing tanks, and a bathing complex. The village has a number of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops scattered along the coast and through its characteristic streets.
