About Formentera A hidden gem in the Balearic Islands, Formentera is the refined alternative to its livelier neighbor, Ibiza. With no airport, the island is accessible only by a scenic 30-minute boat ride from Ibiza or ferry from Barcelona — a detail that preserves its sense of exclusivity. The island is also very safe, you can leave your property unlocked and unattended for months, a luxury that is available only in certain places nowadays. Here, unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear waters, boutique hotels, and upscale restaurants define an elevated lifestyle rooted in simplicity and serenity. Calle Cala Saona takes its name from one of Formentera’s most celebrated coves, Cala Saona, a west-facing inlet on the island’s quieter flank where the light turns amber well before sunset. The road runs through a landscape of low pine forest, dry-stone walls, and agricultural land that has changed little in character for generations. Properties here sit on generous plots with genuine separation between neighbours, and the scale of the surroundings, open sky, scrubland, and sea views, defines the address as much as any built fabric.
Cala Saona beach is within a few minutes on foot or by bicycle. The village of Sant Francesc Xavier, Formentera’s administrative centre, is roughly four kilometres away and holds the island’s main market, pharmacy, and a concentration of restaurants including Pequeña Isla and Can Rafalet. La Savina, the ferry port, is approximately eight kilometres by road.
Formentera has no airport. All arrivals come through La Savina port, reached by ferry from Ibiza in approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Ibiza Airport connects to Madrid, Barcelona, London, and other European cities, with journey times from La Savina to the airport of around 20 minutes by taxi or transfer. High-speed rail from Barcelona to Madrid takes under three hours for onward connections. The absence of an airport is the primary factor that limits visitor volume and preserves the island’s character.
