Draguignan sits at the heart of the Var department, set back from the coast in the rolling hills of inland Provence. The old town retains its medieval street plan, with a clock tower, covered market halls, and stone facades that reflect centuries of Provençal civic life. It serves as the prefecture of the Var and carries the cultural weight of a genuine working Provençal town, distinct from the more tourist-oriented coastal strip to the south.

The covered market on Place du Marché operates several mornings a week and anchors daily life in the centre. Rue de la République and the surrounding streets offer independent food shops, bakeries, and cafés. The Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires de Moyenne Provence documents regional heritage. Les Arcs-sur-Argens, a short drive away, is a well-regarded base for exploring Var wine country.

Les Arcs-sur-Argens station, approximately 15 kilometres south, provides TGV connections to Marseille in under an hour and to Paris in roughly four hours. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is around 90 kilometres east, typically a 75 to 90 minute drive. The A8 motorway is accessible via the RN555, connecting Draguignan to both the Italian border and the Aix-en-Provence corridor with reasonable ease.
