Cassis occupies a singular position on the Provençal coastline, wedged between the limestone massif of the Calanques and the dramatic red cliffs of Cap Canaille, the highest maritime cliff in France. The town has long attracted a discerning crowd drawn to its working fishing port, its pale stone architecture, and its proximity to some of the most protected coastal landscape in the country. The Calanques National Park, established in 2012, borders the town directly to the west.
The port is the social centre of daily life, lined with restaurants including La Villa Madie, which holds two Michelin stars. The Tuesday and Friday morning market on Place Baragnon covers local produce, cheese, and Provençal goods. The town’s own AOC white wine is produced by several domaines within the commune, including Clos Sainte-Magdeleine.
Cassis sits 30 kilometres east of Marseille, reachable by train from Gare de Cassis in approximately 40 minutes, or by car via the A50 motorway in around 25 minutes. Marseille Provence Airport is approximately 40 kilometres away, roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car. Marseille Saint-Charles station connects to Paris by TGV in three hours and to Lyon in under two hours, making Cassis practical for buyers who travel regularly.
