There are stories that bricks remember better than men. Le Colombare Castle stands on a hill overlooking Lake Trasimeno, in the very same area where, in 217 BC, Hannibal’s legions inflicted one of the most resounding defeats in ancient history upon the Romans. The watchtower dominating the complex has stood there ever since, with its pointed-arch windows, dovecotes carved into the sandstone and the brick corbels crowning the summit: the dovecotes that give this place its name, and which make it recognisable from afar like few other castles in the world.
History and recognition
The property is classified as a National Monument and appears as ‘Castel Fiume’ in the fresco in the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums, one of the few private properties in the world that can claim this kind of historical recognition. Its origins probably date back to the 11th–12th centuries; we know for certain that the walls were renovated in 1313.
The tower and the castle
The square sandstone tower rises six storeys high: on the top floor, a bedroom overlooks Lake Trasimeno and the Umbrian landscape, offering a view that no villa’s main floor could ever replicate.
The already approved restoration plan distributes the total 534 square metres across the tower and the castle ruins over several levels, each with its own designated use.

Groundfloor: Kitchen-diner, wine cellar, loggia, terrace, dining room and two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Surrounding the castle are 6,500 square metres of land with an olive grove, set in a commanding hillside position that ensures privacy and unobstructed views.
