Santanyí sits in the southeast corner of Mallorca, distinct from the island’s more developed resort towns by its architectural coherence and unhurried pace. The town is built almost entirely from locally quarried marès sandstone, a warm golden limestone that gives the streets, facades, and the 18th-century church of Sant Andreu a unified, deeply rooted character. The weekly market on Plaça Major draws both residents and buyers from across the island, reinforcing Santanyí’s reputation as one of Mallorca’s most genuinely preserved market towns.

Daily life centres on Plaça Major and the Wednesday and Saturday markets. Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards, two of the southeast coast’s most sheltered coves, are roughly four kilometres from the town centre. The area has a small but established gallery scene, and restaurants such as Es Molí d’en Bou in nearby Sant Llorenç represent the regional fine dining offer.

Palma de Mallorca is approximately 60 kilometres from Santanyí, a drive of around 50 minutes via the Ma-19. Palma Airport, the main international gateway for the Balearic Islands, handles direct routes to most major European cities and is served by carriers including Iberia, Lufthansa, and British Airways. Journey time from Santanyí to the airport is roughly 45 to 55 minutes by car. There is no direct rail connection to the southeast of the island.
