Vence occupies a hillside position in the Alpes-Maritimes, roughly 10 kilometres inland from the Côte d’Azur, at an elevation that gives it a distinctly different character from the coastal resorts below. The medieval old town, enclosed within its original ramparts, centres on the Place du Peyra and the cathedral, and has attracted artists and writers for generations, most notably Henri Matisse, who created the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the early 1950s. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 30 kilometres from Vence, reachable in around 35 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic, with direct services to most major European cities and intercontinental routes. The A8 motorway connects via Cagnes-sur-Mer, placing Monaco within an hour and Aix-en-Provence under two hours. A bus service links Vence to Nice via Cagnes-sur-Mer, where TGV connections are available.
