Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs the length of Mallorca’s northwest coast and carries UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The town has a distinct identity shaped by its relative isolation: until the early twentieth century, the only land route over the mountains was a mule track, and the town developed strong commercial ties with France instead. That history left Sóller with an unusually refined architectural character, visible in its Modernista facades and the grand townhouses lining Plaça de la Constitució.

Daily life in Sóller centres on the main square, where the weekly market runs on Saturdays. Restaurants including Es Canyis on the port and Bens d’Avall above the bay draw serious diners. The port district, Port de Sóller, is three kilometres from the town centre and reachable by the historic tram that has run since 1913.

Sóller is connected to Palma by the narrow-gauge Ferrocarril de Sóller railway, a journey of around one hour through the mountains, departing from the town’s own station. By road, the Ma-11 tunnel cuts the drive to Palma to approximately 30 minutes. Palma de Mallorca Airport is roughly 35 kilometres from Sóller and operates direct routes to most major European cities, with journey times from the airport to the town centre of under 45 minutes by car.
