Benfica is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon and encompasses approximately two-thirds of the Portuguese capital’s main green lung, Monsanto Forest Park.
Benfica began as a village of farmers from the Saloia region. In the 15th century, it was made the seat of a judicial district within the Termo de Lisboa, with two private judges being appointed. It was also at this time that three important brotherhoods were established: Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Santo António and São Sebastião.
Following the abolition of the Termo de Lisboa in 1852, the territory of Benfica was first incorporated into the newly created municipality of Belém and later, in 1886, was divided. The area outside Lisbon’s new Circunvalação Road was incorporated into Oeiras (and is currently part of Amadora), while the area inside it was incorporated into Lisbon, giving rise to the present-day parish.
The city continued to grow, which was reflected in the increasing urbanisation of the parish. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the population tripled from 17,843 inhabitants to approximately 50,000.
In 1959, the territory was divided again, giving rise to the parish of São Domingos de Benfica.
More recently, alongside increasing construction, there has been a decline in the resident population, not only due to ageing but also because younger residents have moved to the outskirts. Energy Rating: D #ref:PROP-35255
