Sanary-sur-Mer occupies a particular position on the Var coast, sitting between Bandol and Toulon with a working port that has retained its character rather than surrendering it to mass tourism. The town became a refuge for German and Austrian intellectuals fleeing the Third Reich in the 1930s, including Bertolt Brecht and Lion Feuchtwanger, earning it the informal title of capital of German literature in exile. That layered identity, Provençal fishing village and European cultural crossroads, still shapes the place today.
The port market runs every Wednesday and Sunday morning and is one of the most well-regarded on the Var coast. Restaurants along the quai Général de Gaulle serve fresh catch daily. The old town is walkable, with the covered market hall, local bakeries, and the church of Saint-Nazaire all within a few minutes on foot. Beaches including Portissol are a short drive.
Toulon-Hyères Airport is approximately 30 kilometres east, around 30 minutes by car, with domestic and European connections. Toulon train station, roughly 15 kilometres away, provides TGV access to Paris Gare de Lyon in under four hours. Marseille Provence Airport is around 60 kilometres west, approximately 50 minutes by car, offering a significantly broader range of international routes including long-haul services.
