Haus, Sanary Sur Mer

Sanary-sur-Mer occupies a privileged position on the Var coast, midway between Bandol and Toulon, where the Provençal hinterland meets a sheltered natural harbour. The town retains the scale and character of a working fishing port, with its coloured boats, weekly market on the quayside, and Belle Époque facades lining the waterfront. In the 1930s it became a refuge for German and Austrian intellectuals, including Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht, a chapter that still informs its quietly cultured identity.

Daily life centres on the Cours Portalis market and the port itself. Restaurants including Le Castel and La P’tite Cour draw a loyal local clientele. The beaches of Portissol and La Gorguette are within a few minutes by car. Bandol, with its wine appellation and broader restaurant scene, is seven kilometres west.

Toulon-Hyères Airport is approximately 30 kilometres east, around 30 minutes by car, with direct flights to Paris and several European cities. Toulon train station, 15 kilometres away, provides TGV connections to Paris Gare de Lyon in under four hours. Marseille-Provence Airport, offering the widest range of international routes, is roughly 60 kilometres and one hour by road.
