Petra is a small inland town in the heart of Mallorca’s Pla region, a largely agricultural plateau that has retained its traditional character more completely than much of the island. The town is best known as the birthplace of Fray Junípero Serra, the Franciscan friar who founded the California mission chain, and his legacy is woven into the fabric of the streets and stone buildings here. The surrounding landscape is defined by almond groves, carob trees, and dry-stone walls.

Day-to-day life in Petra centres on the Plaça Ramon Llull and the weekly market. The town has a handful of local restaurants and cafés, a supermarket, and basic services. Manacor, the island’s second-largest city with a broader range of shops, medical facilities, and restaurants, is approximately 12 kilometres away by car.

Petra sits roughly in the geographic centre of Mallorca, placing it within practical reach of multiple coasts. The beaches of Cala Millor and Porto Cristo on the east coast are around 25 kilometres away. Palma, the island capital, is approximately 45 kilometres to the west, a drive of under an hour. Palma de Mallorca Airport handles direct flights to most major European cities and is reachable in roughly 40 minutes by car.
