Mahón, the capital of Menorca, occupies a commanding position above one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, a deep-water port that has shaped the city’s character for centuries. The historic centre retains its Georgian and Spanish colonial architecture, a legacy of British occupation in the eighteenth century, with wide streets, covered arcades, and stone townhouses that give the old town a distinctly composed, unhurried quality unlike anywhere else in the Balearics.

Regular ferry services from the port connect Mahón to Barcelona (around eight hours overnight) and Valencia. Barcelona is also reachable by air in under an hour.
