Querencia. A home that will hold you.
In Spanish, querencia is the place where you feel most yourself. It’s where you instinctively return, where you are at home without trying. We chose the name before drawing the first line, because it is the feeling we want this house to give.
Querencia is part of our Colección Huella, a small series of villas we design, build and furnish ourselves. We don’t work from a catalogue. Every material has been chosen by hand, and we’ll be on site every day to see each detail through.
The plot sits in a quiet, established residential area of Jávea, five minutes from the historic centre, the Arenal beach and the port. Two of the area’s best international schools, Lady Elizabeth and Xàbia International College, are also close by. The house will face south-west. In the evening the sun will set right in front of you, and during the day you’ll watch the light move across the Montgó.
You’ll step into a double-height entrance, and at its centre stands the staircase. We’re designing it as the sculptural heart of the house: free-standing, with soft, organic curves shaped to echo the natural materials around it. It’s the kind of piece you’ll find yourself looking at every time you come home.
Throughout the house, the feeling is one of calm. Large 120×120 cm tiles in a soft sand tone will run through the house with barely visible grout lines, so the floor reads as one continuous surface. Window and sliding door frames in oxidised brown Technal aluminium will frame the views. Underfloor heating will warm the whole house in winter, with air conditioning built discreetly into the ceilings.
Warm oak will run through the house. The doors, the made-to-measure kitchen and the bathroom drawers will all be in oak. The built-in wardrobes will be Mallorcan-style louvred pine, made in Spain and painted to match, so every room shares the same warm tone with a Balearic feel.
The bathrooms are where we’ve put the most thought. They will have microcement surfaces, terracotta tiling and lime plaster walls. Each sink will be custom-made in travertine-look ceramic, and the taps, toilets and showers will all be built in, so nothing interrupts the lines.
Upstairs, the master bedroom will have the best view of the house. There will be four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a guest WC in total. Below the house there will be a double garage with generous storage.
Outside is where much of life will happen. There will be almost 200 m² of terraces on a 1,028 m² plot. The pergolas will be built from chestnut beams layered with cañizo reed, so they give real shelter from both sun and rain. We’ve designed the pool ourselves: 10×4 metres, with a Roman staircase and a bench running its full length. Pool heating and a cover are available as options. The façade will be finished in smooth render in a soft white-beige stone tone, so the house sits quietly in its garden.
Querencia will be delivered ready to live in. It will be fully furnished in a bohemian, natural-material style, with pieces from dBodhi and others chosen in the same spirit. You’ll bring your suitcase; the rest will be waiting.
