Châteauneuf-du-Pape occupies a commanding position in the southern Rhône Valley, its medieval village rising above some of the most celebrated vineyards in France. The ruined papal castle at the summit, built as a summer residence for the Avignon popes in the fourteenth century, defines the skyline and the identity of the place. The village itself is compact, stone-built, and unhurried, with the particular quality of light and heat that characterises inland Provence at its most authentic.

The village centre offers wine merchants, the Musée du Vin, and several respected restaurants including La Mère Germaine and Le Verger des Papes. Avignon, with its full range of markets, cultural institutions, and commercial services, is approximately 18 kilometres south. Orange is around 12 kilometres to the north.

Avignon TGV station, roughly 20 minutes by car, connects directly to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes by high-speed rail. Avignon also has a smaller city-centre station with regional services. Marseille Provence Airport is around 90 kilometres south, approximately one hour by car, and serves a broad range of European and international destinations. Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport is roughly 180 kilometres north.
