A handsome red-brick Victorian home of exceptional character and scale, The Old Nursery occupies a highly regarded position in one of St Neots most sought-after residential streets.

Carefully balancing period elegance with contemporary family living, this impressive five-bedroom property offers versatile accommodation, landscaped gardens and an abundance of original architectural detail.

From the moment you arrive, the handsome red-brick façade establishes the character of the home, complemented by a gated driveway providing parking for up to three vehicles and an attractive paved front garden. Inside, the sense of space is immediately apparent, with high ceilings, elegant proportions and an array of original features creating a wonderful backdrop for modern living.

The entrance hall sets the tone, with its Victorian geometric and mosaic tiled floor, colourful stained-glass detailing in the door and surrounding panels, complemented by the original and restored cornicing. Throughout the principal rooms, the Victorian character has been carefully retained or restored, from the magnificent sash windows to the period-style fireplaces, while contemporary lighting, finishes and carefully considered interiors ensure the house feels both stylish and inviting.

Adding to the period charm, cast iron column radiators, installed in 2021, feature throughout the entrance hall and all three ground-floor reception rooms, with in-keeping column radiators in the kitchen and upstairs bedrooms, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the home.

At the heart of the home is the exceptional kitchen and dining space, recently transformed (fitted in 2025) with the installation of a bespoke kitchen that combines Shaker-style design with the practical demands of modern family life. Features include a double Belfast sink, hard-wearing Silestone quartz worktops and solid brass handles.

Appliances include a smart Miele semi-integrated dishwasher, Miele cooker hood, Rangemaster range cooker, Bosch integrated microwave, and smart Samsung double American-style fridge-freezer incorporated into the pull-out pantry unit which provides plentiful food storage. This room provides an ideal setting for everyday family life as well as entertaining, with ample space for a substantial refectory dining table, sociable kitchen island and a beautifully appointed kitchen area.

Large sash windows flood the room with natural light, while the fireplace provides a wonderful focal point and a reminder of the buildings Victorian heritage.

The ground floor offers a choice of impressive reception spaces, each with its own character and flexibility. The formal sitting room provides an calm space for quieter occasions, while the family room opens directly towards the garden, creating an easy connection between the house and outside space. A south-facing study at the front of the house provides excellent space for working from home or could equally serve as a playroom, hobby room or additional sitting room. The accommodation is therefore wonderfully adaptable to the changing needs of a modern family.

A well-appointed utility room (fitted in 2025) adds further practicality, providing a workspace with excellent storage and ceiling-mounted pulley maid, while the thoughtful arrangement of the ground floor ensures that the more functional elements of family life remain beautifully separate from the principal entertaining spaces.

There is also a recently refurbished cloakroom (fitted in 2024) with Burlington toilet, washbasin and taps, on the ground floor which is convenient for visiting guests.

Upstairs, the galleried landing is flooded with natural light from a large picture window and provides an additional area that could be used as a reading nook, study space or quiet retreat. The five bedrooms are all impressively proportioned, retaining the high ceilings and generous dimensions synonymous with the period.

The principal bedroom features a bay of three large sash windows drawing in an abundance of natural light. Its beautifully designed en-suite bathroom combines contemporary finishes with timeless Victorian-inspired detailing, including a luxurious roll-top bath.

The remaining bedrooms offer considerable flexibility for family and guests, including one bedroom with an additional en-suite bathroom. There is also a beautifully appointed family bathroom with contemporary metro-style tiles and encaustic-style tiled flooring, statement lighting and traditional sanitaryware create spaces that feel both characterful and luxurious.

A staircase continues to the attic level, where a versatile music and games room provides an excellent additional space. Equally suited to a home office, creative studio, teenagers retreat or hobby room, this upper level adds another dimension to the already substantial accommodation, while the adjoining boarded loft space offers considerable storage and potential for further adaptation, subject to any necessary consents.

Outside, the gardens have been thoughtfully landscaped by the current owners, creating a beautiful extension of the living accommodation and a wonderfully private setting for both relaxation and entertaining. The rear garden is enclosed by impressive established walls (including original Victorian brick on the East side) and mature planting, with carefully considered areas for dining, entertaining and enjoying the garden throughout the seasons.

A block-paved patio provides the perfect setting for summer gatherings, while a herringbone patterned deck at the rear of the garden creates an additional outdoor dining area or a space to read away from it all. The garden is framed by established trees and thoughtfully planted borders, creating a mature and secluded atmosphere rarely found so close to the centre of St Neots. A glazed outbuilding offers a practical space for a workshop or could potentially also be used for fitness equipment for example as a home gym or bicycle storage.

There is a wonderful sense of connection between the house and garden, with the landscaped outdoor spaces complementing the proportions and sociable nature of the interior. Whether hosting friends and family, enjoying al fresco dining or simply retreating to the garden at the end of the day, the outside space has been designed to be enjoyed.

The Old Nursery is a home that successfully combines the grandeur and architectural detail of its Victorian origins with the sophistication and flexibility expected of a modern family residence.

Its substantial accommodation, high-quality new kitchen, beautifully landscaped gardens and enviable St Neots setting make it an exceptional proposition for those seeking a characterful home with genuine space, style and versatility.

Above all, it is a house that feels made for living in, equally suited to busy family life, relaxed weekends and entertaining on a grander scale.

Seller Insight
The Old Nursery has been our home for the past six years. What first drew us to the house was the location as it enabled us to be close to my wifes family.”

Since moving in, weve modernised almost every room, including overhauling the kitchen, boarding and insulating the loft for a useable storage space, and completely landscaping the gardens. Weve also put a lot of care into retaining the character of the house, restoring the original cornices using heritage building techniques and materials, repointing the brickwork and carrying out work sympathetically to its Victorian heritage. Its been important to us to make the house work for modern family life without losing what makes it special.

My favourite room is the study cum bedroom upstairs at the back of the house. Its become my own retreat, somewhere I can relax, while the garden room is another favourite. Its such a bright, lovely space, with windows on two sides and beautiful views over the garden.

The garden has been a big part of our life here too. We wanted something that was family-friendly and easy to maintain, so the layout and landscaping were designed with that in mind.

Theres plenty of lawn, two beautiful lime trees and, despite being in town, we get so much wildlife visiting. Weve had countless birds, hedgehogs and squirrels making themselves at home, which is something weve really enjoyed.

Its also a house that has been made for entertaining. The kitchen is a great space, and with three reception rooms theres plenty of room for everyone. Weve had parties here with 30 or 40 people and never felt on top of each other. Christmas in particular has always been lovely here with the fireplaces going for added atmosphere.

The community is another thing weve loved about living here. The street has a wonderful atmosphere, and theres a WhatsApp group for arranging nights out, get-togethers and street parties. It has that really welcoming community feel that you dont always find.

Were also close to Priory Park, which has been brilliant for dog walks, and being near the train station makes getting into London incredibly easy. Being able to walk to grab a coffee in town in minutes or our groceries from Waitrose has also been very handy. Despite being so well connected, the area still manages to have that lovely riverside village feel, and weve easily taken our kayak out onto the River Great Ouse from time to time.

There are so many little things well miss, but one of the biggest will be the pizza oven in the garden. Theres something really lovely about sitting outside with a glass of wine, the fire burning, even if were not cooking pizza! And, of course, there are all the memories that you cant replace. Weve measured our son against the door frames as hes grown, and there are little reminders of our family life all over the house.

Information on the Area
St Neots is a charming riverside market town dating back to the Middle Ages. During the Victorian times it was an important paper-making centre and some of the original mill buildings can still be seen by the river. The town centres around a broad and spacious marketplace, one of the largest in England, and many characterful period properties line the square and lanes leading off it.

A traditional market has been held here for over 800 years and today the market offers a variety of goods and locally produced foods. The town centre has a range of high street brand and independent shops, banks, restaurants, and bars and is well served by several of the large supermarket chains. There is also a variety of leisure facilities including, a multi-screen cinema, bowling alley, sports and leisure centre and numerous sports clubs to suit all ages and abilities. The river, Great Ouse, meanders to the west of the town and is popular with pleasure craft and anglers. A lovely riverside park runs the length of the town and forms part of the Ouse Valley Way and is the venue for a variety of events throughout the summer months.

Transport
St Neots has easy access to the A1(M) and A428 providing fast access into the national motorway network (with National Highways £1bn dual carriageway improvement scheme due to open from Spring 2027 and extend the existing A421). The Madingley Road Park & Ride for Cambridge City centre is about 25 minutes drive away and the drive to Peterborough takes about 35 minutes. Fast train links run from St Neots with journey times into London Kings Cross in approx. 40 minutes or to the North via Peterborough from around 23 minutes.

Education
St Neots is in the catchment area for some well-regarded schools and the highly regarded Kimbolton School, an independent day and boarding school, is about 15 minutes drive away and it also offers a school bus service to the town.
