About This Car

MG production accelerated with the B reaching 250,000 units by 1971, and the brand’s one millionth model was assembled in 1975. For consignment, a 1978 MG MGB roadster showing 78,842 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a NY title exemption. Pulled from 20 years of storage, the car was refreshed by renowned NJ British car shop, Tuxedo Motorsport and included a new clutch slave, fuel pump, tires, and top.

Exterior
Eliciting smiles with its attractive profile and proportions, this one is draped in Dark Carmine Red, a nice complement to the typical black features of the car, including the most basic of things, the tires! Then, of course there are the rubber bumpers which integrate the intake grille in front and chin spoiler. The canvas top is also black, with three windows in great shape with no hazing. The 14-inch wheels have black inserts for even more pizazz and it all works together to create a handsome little car. They are wrapped in 185/70R14 tires with a mid 2020 date code. Out back, a luggage rack has been added ahead of the red topped tail lights that look like glazed candy corn adorning the edges of the rear with reverse lights embedded in the latch panel. The brightwork and paint are quite good on the car with just a few imperfections noted as some scratches, inclusions, and chin scrapes.

Interior
Circle and squares are part of the tan vinyl door cards that are simple and show a touch of age along with cracking on the header of the driver’s side. Tan cloth bucket seats, slightly aged, are tall and include head restraints. Up front, a four spoke plastic steering wheel is ahead of the instrument cluster ahead, complete with tach and speedometer and the normal engine condition gauges in a textured black plastic base, again with some slight patina. The center stack has an updated radio with AM/FM,CD along with vent control dials and a lighter with requisite lit cigarette graphics. The shifter has definitely seen some street time and probably some sun while a combination of black and tan carpet line the footwells in good condition. Patina is present in the boot along with a spare tire.

Drivetrain
Relatively clean is how we find the bay where an 1800cc inline four cylinder resides, fueled by a Weber 2-barrel carburetor and rowed into motion via a 4-speed manual transmission. Power is routed to the rear axle with 3.90 gears. Power brakes are on board and speaking of power, this car is equipped with 62.5 horsepower.

Undercarriage
We’ve got some surface rust and some residual oil up front but overall the underside is clean and solid. It’s home to a single exhaust and stock style muffler, terminating via a straight pipe out back. Slowing and stopping is accomplished through power brakes with disc up front and drums in back. Basic suspension is set up as coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
Toys are purpose built for fun and the toy-like character of the MGB makes it fun from the first minute. We row through the gears and around the test loop where the car proves to run, handle and stop well. We note the clock, rear turn signals and brake lights are not working, but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

They say it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow, and that’s the case here with this spry Brit. Tuck this one into the garage for weekends and don’t forget to join the active MG club in your region; it’s an easy way to make friends and keep your little sports car running right at the same time!
