"Full Size Stunner"

The 1969 Ford XL SportsRoof is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated full-size cars of its era. Ford completely redesigned the XL for 1969 on an all-new platform with a longer 121-inch wheelbase, and the SportsRoof body style brought a distinctive tunnel-back roofline with flying buttress sail panels that gave the car a profile unlike anything else in the Ford lineup. The XL was only available in two body styles that year, the SportsRoof and a convertible, making both configurations genuinely rare. Ford’s own advertising called it the sportiest, best-handling Ford XL in history. This one is finished in Blue Teal Metallic with a white pinstripe, white vinyl top, and black leather inside, a combination that is as striking now as it was in 1969.

Under the hood is a 390ci V8 backed by the three-speed automatic with flip-up hidden headlights giving the front end a clean, unbroken look. An Edelbrock intake has been added to give the engine a little more to work with, and factory air conditioning means this car is as comfortable on a summer drive as it is impressive to look at parked at a show.

Inside, the black leather interior is clean with wood interior trim that gives the XL cabin a finished, upscale feel that sat above the standard Galaxie in both equipment and character. The XL was positioned as the sporty, performance-oriented choice in Ford’s full-size lineup, and the interior reflects that intention.

The SportsRoof roofline on this car was distinctive enough that automotive historians have noted the resemblance between its flying buttress sail panels and the Jaguar XJ-S roofline that appeared years later, though whether that was coincidence or inspiration has never been confirmed. Either way, what Ford built in 1969 was a full-size coupe with a shape that still commands a second look more than 50 years later.
