”The newfound quickness and consistent engine performance are only part of the story as the Cobra has left its crude pony car roots and joined the ranks of competent sports coupes. The floaty, not sure what the tires are doing feeling that has plagued Mustangs is gone. Now you can point the Cobra exactly where you want and assume it will go there. The car feels appropriately firm without being harsh, and it never bounces off bumps or potholes.” Car and Driver, July 2001.

For consignment, a 2001 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra convertible with a title verified 77,602 actual miles. This is a well maintained and garaged example with a long list of new parts provided by our consignor.

Exterior
Coming at you, it’s the front fascia that comes to this car via a 2003/2004 Cobra, housing low, wide fog lights coupled with air intakes and on this particular example, a Cobra emblem usurps the former running horse. From the side, this Black beauty displays more of the coveted Cobra emblems and wears 17-inch SVT Cobra wheels, five spoke chrome beauties wrapped in 245/45ZR17s tires and showing off the red calipers behind. Out back, Cobra is stamped into the bumper cover and while you sometimes see this filled in with paint, this one remains subtle in monochromatic black. Angle cut polished exhaust tips are here, tucked into the rear valance and a black canvas top holds a glass window with defrost. At a distance, the paint and body are fantastic but up close and magnified, imperfections are noted as chips throughout with many touched up scratches, inclusions, scuffs, road rash, swirly inclusions on the door, a drop of paint run, and chin spoiler scrapes.

Interior
There were only two interior color options for the ’01 Cobras and most of them had this, the Dark Charcoal and Medium Graphite interior that starts on clean door panels that are replete with sweeping ovals and a small, carpeted kick panel. The charcoal of the leather seats surround gray Alcantara inserts and all seats, including the rear 2+2 are in great shape, with some noticeable wear and compression on the driver’s throne including a tear and compressed inserts. Our Cobra branded steering wheel leads to SVT’s common use of white faced gauges, here arranged with two mains, and four auxiliary to the sides in a symmetrical layout that’s easy to read. A basic A/C panel tops the center stack over an aftermarket AM/FM/CD with aux and USB.  Black leather wraps the knob of the shifter that doglegs up from the floor in Mustang fashion, housed in plastic encasement and wrapped in a leather boot. Black carpet floods the floor cleanly, and the trunk is finished in gray cloth panels presenting very nicely.

Drivetrain
Engraved signatures of the builders live on this impressive looking rebuilt 4.6 liter DOHC 32 valve V8, pumping out 320 horsepower and mated to a rebuilt Tremec TR3650 5-speed manual transmission with a newer throwout bearing as per our consignor, that routes power to the Ford 8.8” rear with 3.27 gears and TracLoc. A painted blue alternator matches the cam broad cam covers in this clean engine bay where our consignor states there’s a newer A/C compressor, motor mounts, O2 sensors, fuel filter, thermostat, oil cooler, and alternator.

Undercarriage
The underside is clean and dry and home to dual exhaust that travels through an H-pipe and a pair of Borla Atak mufflers before exiting brightly in the back. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and our consignor reports that rotors, calipers and pads are newer and line lock is installed. Independent uspension consists of coil springs at both ends and newer Bilstein shocks.

Drive-Ability
The car warms up with a characteristic bellow and provides raucous good power throughout the test loop. It also handles well and stops on demand. This black stallion checks all the boxes for functionality. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

SVT stood for Special Vehicles Team and just about everything they put their hands on was indeed special. There are many reasons why Ford Mustangs are so popular across the country, and those touched by SVT are one echelon higher than the millions of cars to leave Ford factories. Bang for buck, there may be no greater performance bargain in the world of specialty cars.
