Having only recently been introduced to the public, the first generation Mustangs seem to have changes made to design aspects nearly every year, some drastic, others subtle. From 1965 to 1966, a few subtle exterior items changed included the door scoops which were done with a 3 bar, black and chrome variant in 1966, the vertical bar through the running horse on the grille was gone in 1966 and the grille itself went from honeycomb design to vertical and horizontal bars, and back up lights were standard for 1966 and optional for 1965, so if you don’t see them chances are it’s a 1965.

For consignment, a 1965 Ford Mustang convertible showing 15,911 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. This recently restored pony features a newer 302 under the hood, air conditioning, four wheel power disc brakes and a virtual laundry list of newer parts intended to improve both the looks and drivability of this American classic.

Exterior
Silver Blue paint drapes the straight steel panels of this car in polished two stage shine perfectly reflecting our indoor lights. A white rocker stripe is the perfect complement to the fully restored white canvas power top and it underscores the iconic Mustang body indent on the sides. Up front, flanking the galloping Mustang badge are inboard GT style fog lights over a straight, chrome bumper. Out back, a luggage rack tops the decklid while the tail lights, latch panel, and bumper present in fantastic condition. The valance is home to the exhaust tips that emerge through polished bezels. Blue capped 14-inch Styled Steel wheels are the ideal choice here and maintain the car’s vintage profile. Paint, body, and trim are excellent on the car, and as usual, our intrepid photograph gets up close and personal!  Imperfections include some light general inclusions, a chip on a fender point, small scuff on a headlight housing, edge chip on cowl, few small scratches on valance, hairline crack under rocker stripe, light blistering in door jamb, and some uneven lettering on right fender.

Interior
The stupendous interior was included in the restoration and we begin with newer door panels in alternating blue and white vinyl with the stitched blue insert hosting the polished hardware and both doors present very nicely. Pony Deluxe upholstery accompanies newer seat foam to create a like new presentation now augmented by a matching center piece with armrest and cupholders between the seats and an auxiliary center piece for the rear passengers who also sit on spotless seats. The combination of wood tones, the blue dash pad and a glossy white mid panel is show worthy and the white steering column includes the Rally Pac. An AM/FM radio is framed in the center while an A/C unit is suspended from the dash and offers a splash of polished metal that’s matched by the familiar T-shifter in the center console. Newer blue loop carpet covers the floor with protective blue mats and a triple 12 volt port has been added on the passenger side. A period vinyl mat covers the floor of the trunk and the spare that resides there, all over clean blue paint and padding.

Drivetrain
Under the hood you’ll find clean conditions and a newer 302ci V8 with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor over a Weiand intake. It’s backed by a rebuilt C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the Ford 8” rear with 3.20 gears. Power brakes, power steering, an electric fan, and air conditioning are now on board. Our consignor states newer steering components have been added.

Undercarriage
With a backdrop of red oxide primer and a new fuel tank, the underside presents in extremely clean condition with only a few scuffs to denote it’s been driven at all! The dual exhaust runs through Xlerator mufflers and resonators before rising slightly to find an exit through the valance. Power disc brakes are now present on all four wheels, pressurized by a new master cylinder and brake booster. Suspension includes coil springs in front with new components and leaf springs in the back.

Drive-Ability
Does it drive as well as it looks? You better believe it! The 302 comes to life with a pleasing exhaust note and the engine and transmission work together to provide a smooth ride that doesn’t lack in power. This restored classic tracks straight, handles well, and stops on a dime. All functional items operate as intended with the exception of the brake lights. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Great attention to detail has created not only a fantastic looking Mustang, but one that is a great driver that instills confidence both in dependability and performance. Absolute winner here for the discerning collector, or someone ready to start their collection with a top tier ’65.
