1930 Ford Model A Pickup

”The first truck ever powered by internal combustion was designed and built in 1896 by Gottlieb Daimler of Germany. It looked like a rear engine hay wagon. The first American pickup trucks were homemade and came on the scene at almost the same moment as the car. Farmers built cargo boxes onto the rear end of their automobiles, especially after Henry Ford’s Model T arrived in 1908. A few planks of oak or hickory and some angle irons from the local blacksmith was all it took.” Smithsonian Magazine 

For consignment, a 1930 Ford Model A pickup truck with the true miles unknown due to PA title exemption and a non-calibrated odometer. Built in 2006, this Ford has components from a Falcon and Fiero that create flying bits of Ford fun!

Exterior
This lowered street rod is bathed in two stage application of Light Pale Green, a unique hue that makes this truck an instant stand out. The monochromatic coverage does not spare the fenders nor the visor, but the radiator shell and headlight buckets contrast sharply in polished metal. Aluminum slots serve as the shoes here with 14-inch in front, 15-inch in back, and heavily staggered size tires that create the right rod rake. No bumper out back where you’ll find blue dot teardrop tail lights under the tailgate where even the hinges are painted to match. Warm beadboard is used in the bed, interrupted only by the gas filler cap and the walls of the bed are clean and show ready. Imperfections are few and include some chips, scuffs, and spider cracks. 

Interior
Two shades of brown cloth dress the doors and along with polished hardware, present in nice condition. This two tone translates to the low back bench seat and at least one shade of brown cloth makes its way onto the back wall. Stick with us here, because brown is the dominant palette that continues onto the steering wheels and dashboard, here taking a more milk chocolate tone. A billet faceplate houses the gauges in the center, a series of ivory faced Dolphin units that blend nicely with the surrounding design. A Hurst shifter rises from the floor which is fully blanketed by brown carpet, and all of it is in great shape. 

Drivetrain
The exposed engine up front is clean and bearing plenty of chrome. It’s a 289ci V8 with aluminum heads and a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor. It’s mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to a Ford 8” rear. The engine and rear are from a 1964 Falcon according to our consignor. The truck has headers and runs on a 12 volt system.

Undercarriage
Super clean conditions are found underneath where the dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers, then turn east and west to exit ahead of each rear wheel through a polished tip. We have disc brakes up front and drums pulling up the rear. Suspension includes coil springs from a Pontiac Fiero up ahead according to our consignor, and ladder bars with coil overs under the bed. 

Drive-Ability
We step into this cozy cabin and the warm tones envelop you like a fall day. The V8 comes to life with a healthy exhaust note and we roll this rod onto the test loop. It provides good power, straight tracking, and go kart-like handling with a relatively low center of gravity. We note the brake lights and high beams don’t work but all other functions availed to the driver operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. 

We get our fair share of street rodded Model A’s and we’ve seen every color of the rainbow. This Light Pale Green is a standout,  the muscular stance of this compact truck makes for a very attractive ride, and the interior is unique. This is a very nice build that’s sure to be a crowd pleaser, even if that’s a crowd of one and that one is you!
