”Glamour of the year. The newest and most exciting of all the beautifully proportioned 59 Fords, the Galaxie! A bright, new personality in cars, the six Galaxie models are a full ’fine car’ 6 passenger expression of Thunderbird luxury and classic simplicity, at a modest Ford price. These Galaxies, as you’ll quickly see, are as wonderfully all the way Thunderbird as a low price Ford can be. Never in any Ford, nor in cars costing far more, have you seen anything as sweet, smart and glamorous as this!” From the lofty 1959 Galaxie brochure

For consignment, a 1959 Ford Galaxie 500 2 door club sedan with a title verified 42,296 actual miles. More than 450,000 Galaxies were produced in 1959 but we’ve seen less than ten here at the mall and most that have passed through were Skyliners. Here’s a unique club sedan!

Exterior
Comparisons to the Thunderbird are threaded throughout the sale brochure as Ford was capitalizing on a successful model while broadening their audience. And while it does share some attributes, it’s also wholly unique in its own way. The rear treatment at the end of a long Raven Black decklid is worth the price of admission here with a giant chrome V connecting posted reverse lights high on the end of a fin like protrusion. From there, jet age tail lights fight for attention successfully, and then you note the chrome bumper that contours to the afterburners. The side has sweeping trim and body features, a broad aluminum spear, and polished fender skirts. Bold and commanding, the front is adorned with a big grille and dual headlights under a polished brow. Imperfections include some scratches, pitted metal work including the C-pillar trim, inclusions, some dings and deplating on bumpers. Overall, the body, paint and trim are in nice shape.

Interior
This is what Ford called ”luxury lounge interior” actually toned down for the club sedan but door panels that still appear wild with three colors that include a grommeted mylar accent on the bottom that we’ve never seen before, but was standard. The redone vinyl and cloth seats are faithful to the original design adding full extension to the black inserts and both the split bench and rear seat are in fantastic condition. Hairline cracks are found throughout the white rim of the dramatic steering wheel and the dashboard is a virtual work of art, sandwiching a central aluminum band by glossy red and housing a sweeping speedometer in a gray faceplate and an AM radio with ivory knobs. The dash curves inward at the ends and red carpet covers the open floor, here showing some age. There’s a white perforated headliner above and a rubberized vinyl mat covers a clean trunk floor.

Drivetrain
Looking very original, we find a 292ci V8 under the hood with red valve covers, a red block, 200 horsepower, and a 2-barrel carburetor. It’s mated to a Ford-O-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission sending power to the Ford 9” rear and 3.10 gears. The car has power brakes and power steering.

Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions are found underneath with some typical soot and oxidation, and a touch of residual oil on the otherwise solid underside. Power drum brakes are on all four wheels and dual exhaust travel through stock style mufflers on their way to an exit through some added polished tips. Coil springs are up front and leaf springs are in back.

Drive-Ability
Roomier than a baby bird and but closely related to the square birds of 58-60, the cabin is a nice place to be and the V8 starts up without complaint. The 15-inch wheels and 75 series tires do their job in tracking straight and absorbing road imperfections and this one proves to be a worthy cruiser. Things that don’t work include the brake lights, radio, and horn. Oddly, the reverse lights only work when the headlights are on. All other functions of this mid-century classic work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

We’ve seen our share of Galaxies, Fairlanes and Thunderbirds, but ’59’s have eluded us here at the mall. We’re thrilled to have this on in inventory and look forward to meeting the next lucky owner!
