For consignment, a 1987 Ford Bronco XLT with a title verified 44,591 actual miles. Yes, this was our idea of aerodynamics in 1987, long before SUV’s became more car-like and this example is a stunning representation of the rugged redesign that is now one of the hottest segments in the collector market. This one comes with a Marti Report.
Exterior
Not only is the shape a sign of the times, so too is the two tone distribution of color which is all but gone from the automotive landscape. Here we have two stage Dark Shadow Blue Metallic over Medium Silver Metallic with molding above the rocker panel and a thin blue line, together sandwiching the center band of silver. The color layers wrap around front and rear but the tailgate takes on an aluminum trim panel and band of red that visually connects the corner tail lights, all under the blue cap with tinted windows. 15-inch wheels have a pair of red pinstripes around the circumference and are wrapped in LT rated all terrain tires with a late 2025 date code. Imperfections are found in the form of scratches and chips throughout, most heavy on the inner tailgate, orange peel, and some discoloration near the molding.
Interior
Handsome door panels include materials dressed in blue include a velour insert, plastic main body, and carpeted lower including a storage bin; both doors and their black and red plastic switch panels are nearly showroom fresh. Low back blue cloth bucket seats also present near perfect and we couldn’t find anything wrong with the rear bench either. Nowadays, they’re putting work stations between seats but in ’87, a wide plastic console with storage and cupholders was our idea of luxury and it’s here in blue. A black steering wheel fronts a mostly black instrument cluster that’s framed in simulated burlwood accents as a bit more luxury creeps in to purpose-built rigs, and an extra gauge for water and oil has been added. The center dash box contains the AM/FM/Cassette radio and A/C panel, canted slightly to the driver while the open floor is a sea of blue carpet with range selector on the tunnel. The cargo area is also nicely appointed with storage bins and more blue carpet with a touch of use but still in extra fine condition.
Drivetrain
Here we have a clean 4.9 liter inline six cylinder rated at 145 horsepower and fuel injected. It’s mated to a C6 3-speed automatic transmission routing power first to the Ford 8.8” in back and to both axles on demand with 3.55 gears.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found underneath where the single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and exits through a narrow steel tailpipe. Brakes are power assisted with disc up front and drums in the back while suspension is composed of radius arms with coil springs ahead, and leaf springs behind.
Drive-Ability
Let’s step back to 1987 as we turn the key and let the fuel injection do its job to start this truck without hesitation. This well preserved example does everything well, tracking straight and exhibiting good power while offering a roomy and comfortable cabin with a birds eye view of the road. All functions on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
So many Broncos were used and put away wet, just as Ford intended. But every once in a while, one graces our Hallowed Halls that hasn’t been beat on and is a shining example of a full size Bronco in nearly pristine original condition. This one is just the case. Grab a lasso, boys, you’re going to want to put this one in your stable.
