Interesting facts about the CITROEN DS 21 BREAK
The Citroën DS 21 Break, which was launched in 1958 as the estate version of the legendary ‘Goddess’, revolutionised the market thanks to its exceptional suitability for everyday use combined with the luxurious ride comfort of the hydropneumatic suspension.
To this day, it is regarded as one of the most fascinating estate cars in automotive history.
The different versions of the DS estate cars
• COMMERCIALE – 5-seater with folding rear bench seat, horizontally split tailgate
• BREAK – 7-seater – like the COMMERCIALE but with an additional 2 folding seats positioned across the direction of travel, behind the rear bench seat in the boot.
• FAMILIALE – 7 or 8-seater – the rear bench seat is narrower (2 people) and mounted further back between the wheel arches. This reduces the boot space. The ‘Break folding seats’ in the boot are omitted. Instead, 3 individual folding seats are fitted directly behind the two front seats (2-3-2), or behind a continuous front bench seat (3-3-2) (facing the direction of travel). Depending on whether individual front seats or a front bench seat were ordered ex-works, the number of seats varies between 7 and 8.
The estate version was launched in 1958 as the DS 19, whilst the model designation DS 21 BREAK was used for the largest engine variant of the time, with 100 hp from 1965 and 104 hp from 1966.
Unlike classic estates of the time, the focus was on high driving comfort and versatility. The car offered a huge load capacity of up to 2,000 litres.
Thanks to the innovative, hydropneumatic suspension with automatic level control, the Break smoothed out every bump in the road, even when fully loaded (up to 7 people plus luggage). The body could be raised for rough terrain or lowered for loading and unloading.
The four-cylinder engine initially produced 104 hp. From 1969, the fuel injection system
(ie – Injection Electronique) delivered a significant increase in power to 120 hp, enabling the large estate car to reach speeds of up to 175 km/h.
