Wonder Haus: Sustainable and Striking
The in-demand rental destination was built in 2001 by Formworks, local experts in earth-sheltered homes. Preserving the environment was kept firmly in mind: Carved into the ground, there’s passive solar heating in winter and the earth’s natural cooling abilities come summer, ensuring maximum energy efficiency and temperature consistency.

Coined “among the quirkiest roadside Americana stays” (yet tucked away and not visible from the street), this is not for those seeking something “standard”. Instead, Wonder Haus is all about what makes it stand out, with the words “peculiar” and “intentionally unconventional” used to describe the magical house, exemplified by ladders leading up to a pair of mezzanine loft areas and an internal Juliet balcony.
That being said, there are plenty of features people often desire, including high ceilings and massive arched windows, meaning oodles of light.

The owners chose the name for a reason: “It’s just full of this sense of wonder – distinct and completely unorthodox.” For example, the eco-friendly retreat was inspired by the Anasazi Tribe’s stargazing practices, and with that in mind, optimally oriented for astrology. From the four-story tower complete with climbing plants, head up to the observation deck, admire the 360-degree unpolluted panoramas, and gaze at the superb dark skies.

Spanning just over 2,600 square feet of space, the current owners began renovating Wonder Haus in 2017 with love and meticulous attention to detail. Noteworthy elements include the spacious and curving “Great Room” with eye-catching hexagonal flooring and a feature mural painted by artist Denise Duong.
The inviting space also boasts a long table (perfect for entertaining) and fabulous vistas out to the sprawling grounds. Additionally, there’s a well-thought-out kitchen overlooking the dining area, two large bedrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, a pair of bathrooms, and a four-vehicle garage.
Prefer staying closer to home? There’s a fire pit surrounded by seating in the garden – ideal for relaxing and taking in the ever-changing sunsets and San Juan Mountains outlooks.
