Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Hawequa Mountain range, approximately an hour from Cape Town and within the Bovlei, a sought-after Wellington agricultural region, De Compagnie presents a rare opportunity to acquire a ±26,7ha property where history, agriculture, water security and lifestyle converge.
Originally granted by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1705, the estate has been farmed for almost three centuries. The original grant called for the planting of oak trees and the establishment of farming and viticulture, laying the foundations for a property steeped in Cape agricultural heritage.
In 2002, the estate was renamed De Compagnie to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the VOC. Restoration of the historic 18th-century homestead commenced at the same time, together with the expansion and upgrading of the vineyards.
Today, the estate offers a combination of heritage architecture, vineyards and orchards, substantial water resources, extensive accommodation and agricultural infrastructure, all against the backdrop of an extraordinary mountain setting.
Although the property remains registered as a wine estate, commercial wine and pot-stilled brandy production has ceased.
The existing vineyards are serviced by drip irrigation, while the guava orchard is irrigated by micro-jets. Additional irrigated land provides scope for further agricultural development, subject to the relevant approvals and water allocations.
One of the property’s most significant assets is its access to substantial water resources.
The Kromme River, a perennial watercourse flowing through approximately 500 metres of the farm, naturally divides the property between the mountain-slope vineyards against the Groenberg and the lower, flatter land to the south.
The farm holds 18ha of irrigation rights from the Kromme River Irrigation Board, a borehole and earthen dam.
At the heart of the estate, surrounded by an expansive established garden framed by mature oak trees, stands the historic ±500m² manor house, whose origins form part of the property’s remarkable agricultural history and complimented by a diverse collection of buildings and improvements consisting of:
• Historic 500m² manor house
• Swimming pool of approximately 140 000 litres
• Pool house, historically the property’s first dwelling and later used as a cowshed, with bathroom and storage facilities
• Die Jonkershuis, a thatched-roof guest cottage originally used as horse stables
• Former wine cellar and office, currently out of commission, with much of the original equipment still in place and potential capacity of approximately 100 tonnes of grapes
• Horse stables accommodating six horses, situated within an approximately 1-hectare paddock
• Two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage
• Three-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage
• Three farm workers’ houses
• Large warehouse/shed incorporating undercover vehicle and implement parking with lockup store; workshop; pesticide store: shower and toilet facilities
De Compagnie represents far more than the acquisition of agricultural land. It offers the opportunity to take ownership of a significant piece of Wellington’s agricultural heritage and to shape its next chapter.
Whether restored as an exceptional private residence, developed into an exclusive country retreat, revived as a boutique wine estate or repositioned as a hospitality and agricultural enterprise, the estate offers the scale, infrastructure and setting to support an ambitious vision.
This rare opportunity to preserve a remarkable historic estate is offered for sale at R49 million in one of Wellington’s most scenic agricultural landscapes.
