Canticaglione (or Cantigaglione) is a beautiful, unspoilt seaside hamlet situated along the southern coast of Sicily, within the municipality of Licata (towards Gela). This location is famous for its wild beaches, sandy dunes, crystal-clear waters and the stream of the same name that flows into the sea just off the coast.

Located a short distance from the border between the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta, from Canticaglione you can explore villages and coastal towns with exceptional historical features and culinary specialities:

1. Licata (town centre – approx. 8–10 km)
Special features: A seaside town steeped in history, characterised by sumptuous Art Nouveau buildings, Castel Sant’Angelo towering above, and its historic harbour. It boasts a varied coastline alternating between sandy beaches (such as Marianello) and rocky coves.
Culinary specialities: Licata’s seafood cuisine reigns supreme at the table. The signature dish is Cavatieddi (short, handmade fresh pasta) served with a sauce made from fish baked in foil or a mixed fish stew. Another absolute delicacy is the Muffuletta, a bread flavoured with wild fennel seeds, traditionally filled with fresh ricotta, grated caciocavallo cheese and salted anchovies. For Easter, Cannileri (or Panarini) are prepared: breads shaped like little baskets, each containing a hard-boiled egg.

2. Falconara and Desusino (Butera) (about 5–10 km east)
Points of interest: Continuing along the SS 115 towards Gela, you enter the Butera area in the province of Caltanissetta. Here stands the spectacular Falconara Castle, the only castle in the area to overlook the sea directly; it is beautifully preserved and surrounded by an exotic park.
Culinary specialities: The coastal area is influenced by the Gulf’s fishing tradition. The local speciality is ‘Pasta con le sarde a mare’: a tongue-in-cheek twist on the classic recipe in which the sardines… stay in the sea! The dish is prepared with wild fennel, pine nuts, saffron and raisins, but enriched with red mullet or cuttlefish caught fresh that very night, finished with a sprinkling of muddica atturrata (toasted breadcrumbs).

3. Gela (approx. 23 km)
Special features: One of Sicily’s oldest towns, founded by the Greeks, renowned for its imposing Timoleontine Walls at Capo Soprano (a unique archaeological site worldwide for its use of unfired bricks).
Culinary specialities: Gela boasts an extraordinary tradition of street food and rotisserie cuisine. Not to be missed are the Scacciate (flatbreads stuffed with vegetables, potatoes, sausage or tomato and caciocavallo cheese) and typical local sweets such as Mastazzoli (mostaccioli), traditional hard biscuits made with cooked grape must or honey, carob, cinnamon and orange zest.

4. Campobello di Licata (about 25 km inland)
Special features: A hilltop town dedicated to agriculture and viticulture. It is famous for the Valle delle Pietre Dipinte, a picturesque literary park where enormous travertine boulders have been painted with scenes from Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Culinary specialities: This town boasts two unique gastronomic treasures of the Agrigento hinterland:
Lu ’Mpurnatu (The Baked Dish): A sumptuous and rich pasta timbale (ziti) topped with a pork ragù simmered for hours, cauliflower, hard-boiled eggs, pecorino cheese and spices.
La ’Mpanata: A sheet of bread dough rolled around a filling of cauliflower cooked in wine and local sausage, then baked strictly in a wood-fired oven.

5. Butera (the hilltop village – approx. 30 km away)
Special features: An ancient medieval village perched in the hinterland, overlooking the plain below. It is dominated by the imposing Norman Castle, and its sun-kissed hills are renowned for producing exceptional red wines (such as Nero d’Avola).
Culinary specialities: In addition to strong-flavoured pecorino cheeses, the village’s true Easter speciality is Pasta cò meli (Pasta with honey): spaghetti dressed with melted local honey, toasted and chopped almonds, cinnamon, finely chopped orange zest and toasted breadcrumbs. A first course with an Arab-Medieval charm and flavour.

The closest airport to Licata is Comiso ‘Pio La Torre’ Airport (also known as Aeroporto degli Iblei), which is located approximately 74 km away. By car, the journey takes around 1 hour and 22 minutes, mainly along the SS115 (State Road 115) heading east. It is a small airport, serving a limited number of domestic and European flights.
If, however, you need to reach a major international hub with many more routes and flight frequencies (both scheduled and low-cost), the main airport to use is Catania-Fontanarossa ‘Vincenzo Bellini’ Airport. This is approximately 131 km from Licata and can be reached in about 1 hour and 58 minutes by car (via the SS417).
