Vence is a medieval hilltop town in the Alpes-Maritimes, sitting at around 325 metres above sea level between the coastal strip and the pre-Alpine foothills. Its old town, enclosed by Roman-era ramparts, has long attracted artists and intellectuals, most famously Henri Matisse, who designed the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the late 1940s. The surrounding countryside, a landscape of terraced olive groves, pine forest, and limestone ridges, gives Vence a character that is distinctly Provençal while remaining within easy reach of the Côte d’Azur.

Daily life in Vence centres on the Place du Grand Jardin and the covered market on Place Clemenceau, which runs several mornings a week. The old town has a good selection of independent restaurants and cafés. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with the Fondation Maeght and its restaurant, is a five-minute drive. Cagnes-sur-Mer and its seafront are roughly fifteen minutes by car.

Vence sits approximately 25 kilometres northwest of Nice, a drive of around 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic via the D2210 or the A8 motorway through Cagnes-sur-Mer. Nice-Côte d’Azur International Airport, the second busiest in France with direct routes to most major European cities and several intercontinental destinations, is reachable in under 40 minutes. The nearest train station with TGV connections is Nice-Ville, linking to Paris in approximately five and a half hours.
