Vence occupies a hillside position in the Alpes-Maritimes, roughly ten kilometres inland from the Mediterranean coast, at an elevation that keeps it noticeably cooler than the coastal resorts below. The medieval old town, enclosed by its original ramparts, has drawn artists and intellectuals for generations, most famously Henri Matisse, who created the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the early 1950s. The surrounding countryside is a landscape of olive groves, dry-stone walls, and views that extend from the Mercantour peaks to the sea.

Daily life in Vence centres on Place du Grand Jardin and the covered market on Place Clemenceau, which runs several mornings a week. The old town holds a good selection of independent restaurants and cafés. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with the Fondation Maeght, is a five-minute drive. Nice and Antibes are both reachable in under thirty minutes by car.

Vence has no rail connection of its own. The nearest train station is Cagnes-sur-Mer, approximately twelve kilometres south, with regular TGV-connected services through Nice. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is around twenty-five kilometres from Vence, typically a thirty to forty-minute drive depending on traffic, and serves a wide range of European and intercontinental routes. Monaco is accessible in under an hour by car.
