Vélez-Málaga is the historic capital of the Axarquía comarca, a fertile inland territory east of Málaga city where the foothills of the Tejeda and Almijara ranges meet the coastal plain. The municipality has a documented agricultural identity stretching back to Phoenician settlement, and its landscape of subtropical orchards, particularly avocado and mango cultivation, has made the Axarquía one of the most productive agricultural zones in southern Europe. The town retains a well-preserved Moorish old quarter centered on the hilltop Fortaleza castle.

Vélez-Málaga town offers a covered market, the Mercado Municipal, along with established restaurants along Calle Cristo and the central Plaza de las Carmelitas. The coastal resort of Torre del Mar, part of the same municipality, is four kilometers away and provides beaches, a seafront promenade, and additional dining and commercial services.

Málaga city is approximately 35 kilometers west via the A-7 coastal motorway, a journey of around 35 to 40 minutes by car. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, one of Spain’s busiest international hubs with direct routes to over 60 countries, is reachable in approximately 30 minutes. Málaga’s María Zambrano station connects to Madrid by high-speed AVE rail in under two and a half hours.
