Salionze is the most populous hamlet of the municipality of Valeggio sul Mincio and is located north of the main town, in the direction of Lake Garda. The name of the locality is linked to the figure of Saint Leo the Great, also known as Saint Leontius. According to tradition, it was in the vicinity of the hamlet, along the banks of the Mincio River, that the historic encounter between the pontiff and Attila took place. After this episode, Attila interrupted his raids in northern Italy and returned to Pannonia. Even today, every year in July, the event is remembered with an evocative historical re-enactment.
