Our Heritage
C. Verne Tomlinson was a Washington farmer. When the Great Depression sent crop prices plummeting in the economic gloom of 1938, he saw the opportunity to sell the farm and open a real estate company selling farms and ranch property.
In 1948 Verne’s son William R. (Bill) Tomlinson joined the company and soon became a leading farm and ranch specialist. In 1968 Bill’s son, Robert H. (Bob) Tomlinson joined the company. Bob perceived that the highest and best use of much of the farmland was no longer in growing crops, but in providing housing. He took the reins in 1971 and set a course for increasing the region’s housing stock. The company’s first branch opened in Clarkston, WA in 1972. In 1976, Tomlinson merged with Alvin J. Wolff companies, leading to its position as the number one real estate company in the Spokane market.
The early 1980s brought significant economic challenges, particularly for the real estate industry. Even in challenging times, Tomlinson saw opportunities for expansion through a series of mergers with Spokane companies like Coldwell Banker Feldman Person and the William Main Company.
Throughout the early 1990s, Tomlinson expanded into North Idaho with the acquisition of several independent companies with four offices in Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint, Idaho and surrounding communities. In the mid-1990s Tomlinson merged with James S. Black to become Tomlinson Black.
In the mid-2000s, Tomlinson merged with Coldwell Banker Aspen and Holland Realty in Boise, Idaho, and acquired a company in Kennewick, Washington. Tomlinson partnered with Realogy in 2007, which provided access to powerful national brands including Coldwell Banker in Eastern Washington.
