Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs the length of Mallorca’s northwest coast and holds UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The town has a distinct character shaped by its relative isolation: until the early twentieth century, the only land route over the mountains was a mule track, and the community developed strong trading ties with France rather than Palma. That history is still legible in the Modernista architecture around Plaça de la Constitució and in the groves of orange and lemon trees that cover the valley floor.

Daily life in Sóller centres on the main square, where the market runs on Saturdays and cafés such as Café Paris and Bar Turismo serve as reliable meeting points. The weekly farmers market, the Mercat de Sóller, supplies local citrus, olives, and produce. Port de Sóller, roughly three kilometres away, offers a sheltered harbour with restaurants including Es Canyis and Lluna de Mar directly on the waterfront.

The historic tram connects Sóller town to Port de Sóller in around fifteen minutes. The narrow-gauge Ferrocarril de Sóller railway links the town to Palma in approximately one hour, departing from a station adjacent to the main square. By road, Palma is around 30 kilometres via the Ma-11 tunnel, taking roughly 30 minutes. Palma de Mallorca Airport handles direct flights to most major European cities, with journey time from Sóller of approximately 40 minutes by car.
