Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along the northwest coast of Mallorca and carries UNESCO World Heritage status for its cultural landscape. The town has a distinct character shaped by its relative isolation: until the early twentieth century, the only land route over the mountains was a mule track, and the community developed strong commercial ties with France instead. Port de Sóller, three kilometres away, provides beach access, seafood restaurants, and the historic tram connection back to town. The Sóller Tunnel connects the valley to Palma in approximately 30 minutes by car, replacing what was once an hour-long mountain crossing. The historic narrow-gauge train to Palma remains an alternative, taking around an hour. Palma de Mallorca Airport is roughly 45 minutes from Sóller by car and operates year-round international routes to most major European cities, with expanded frequency from spring through autumn.
